Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014

‘Come on over, we’ve got the billy on.’ Tony Kookshorn, Grey District Mayor

You could be forgiven for thinking the West Coast is all about Punakaiki and the twin glaciers, but linger longer along the highway between Kohaihai and Jackson Bay and you’ll see that these high-profile sights are just the tip of the iceberg.

So determined were we to spread word of West Coast wonderment that we pitched it as one of the world’s most exciting travel destinations for Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014.

Our write-up profiled what was hot, and what was not. Hot: exploring the backcountry by bike via two brand new Great Rides – the West Coast Wilderness Trail and the Old Ghost Road. Four years later, and they’ve never been better – in fact they’ve bedded down as two of the nation’s best.

What’s not? Talking about the weather: ‘In reply to any comment on legendarily wet West Coast conditions, expect to hear Coasters proclaim that the rain falls “mainly in big drops, and mostly at night.”’
