‘Such a cool accolade.’ Vicki Fairley, Venture Taranaki
‘The joke goes that most travellers who reach Taranaki have just taken a wrong turn …’ So begins our write-up in Lonely Planet’s annual treatise on top spots for travellers – Best in Travel.
Taranaki was the first chapter we ever researched for the Lonely Planet New Zealand guidebook – back in 2005 – and it was on this trip that we got wind of the proposed Len Lye Centre, and met Rob Needs of Kiwi Outdoors who shared his dream for a cross-Taranaki day hike to rival the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Ten years (and eight WOMADs) later, we finally got a chance to help propel this underrated region into the international spotlight when it took out the number 2 spot on Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Regions to travel to in 2017.
So, we say GO! GO! GO! For Len Lye’s spectacular kinetic and cinematic art, for the Pouakai/Taranaki Crossing, for black-sand surf beaches, fantastic festivals, a burgeoning culinary scene and the ever-present power of the mighty maunga. A little bit out there, and a whole lot to love.
